Over 2,000 essential products will be sold at an average 8 percent lower price, announced the General Director of the Supermarket Union in Greece Apostolos Petalas after a meeting with Development Minister Takis Theodorikakis, ANA-MPA reported, BTA reported.
The initiative for this is the ministry's, and its goal is to convince retail chains to reduce their average profit on these products for the benefit of society and mainly vulnerable groups.
Sky Television specifies that the reduction covers 2,180 products - 1,074 food products and 1,106 from other categories. Of the total, 1,356 are the chains' own brands, and 824 are brands of other companies. The discounted products cover about 10 percent of the supermarket assortment.
Sky journalist Nikos Filippidis reported that the price reductions will start to appear on store shelves by the end of the week. These products must be specially marked and the percentage of the discount must be indicated on the label. The aim is to maintain the lower prices at least until the end of the year.
