US President Donald Trump expects to reach agreements with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping when they meet in South Korea next week, Reuters reports.
They could range from resuming soybean purchases from Beijing to curbing nuclear weapons.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he planned to discuss Chinese purchases of Russian oil and how to end Russia's war in Ukraine, now in its third year.
"I think we're going to make a deal," Trump told reporters during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
He believes Xi has changed his mind about the war in Ukraine and would be open to "I'm not sure he did at the beginning - he would like this war to end now," he said.
Trump's comments contrasted with more pointed remarks from his chief trade negotiator and Treasury secretary.
The US president played down China's restrictions on rare earth exports that have rattled markets, calling them a "disruption" and describing the tariffs as a "more serious" problem.
Trade tensions between the US and China, the world's two largest economies, have escalated in recent weeks after months of relative calm. Trump imposed additional 100% tariffs on China, set to take effect on November 1, after China announced controls on exports of almost all rare earths.
