At least four people were killed during an opposition-organized demonstration in Douala, Cameroon's economic capital.

Demonstrators demanded recognition of their candidate, Bakary Issa Chiroma, in the October 12 presidential election, Reuters reported, citing Chiroma's campaign headquarters.

Shooting broke out during the demonstration, the agency reported. There were no official reports from the authorities about casualties during the protest.

A day earlier, Chiroma called for demonstrations in his support in all cities in the country on October 26. "Come out and organize peaceful marches at all major intersections," the news portal Actu Cameroun quoted excerpts from his address.

Meanwhile, reports have been circulating on Cameroonian social media in recent hours that Chiroma has fled the country. The opposition leader denied this and said he was preparing a "victory demonstration."

According to figures released by the electoral commission, current President Paul Biya, 92, won the presidential election with 53.66% of the vote. His main rival, former minister Chiroma, received 35.19% of the vote. Chiroma rejected the electoral commission's figures and said he won with 60% of the vote.

Cameroon's Constitutional Council (CC) will announce the winner and the final vote count on October 27. Chiroma said he intends to lead his supporters into the streets if the Constitutional Court confirms the election commission's data.
