The German government does not expect the postponement of Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful's visit to Beijing to have a significant impact on cooperation with China, deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer said today, quoted by DPA, BTA reports.
Meyer said he did not believe that “the postponement will have a significant impact on the future policy of the German government“. Berlin is still interested in “respectful and good dialogue“ with the Chinese government, he added.
“We want to work together closely, they are interested in constructive exchanges, it is clear: China and Germany need this cooperation“, the Foreign Ministry spokesman added.
The comments come after Vaudeful's visit to China, which was expected to take place this week, was canceled at the last minute on Friday when it became clear that Beijing had only organized one meeting for the German minister, DPA noted.
Vadeful hopes to speak by phone with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi as soon as possible. However, no date has been set for this yet, DPA reports.
It is also unclear whether the postponement of the German Foreign Minister's visit will have consequences for the plans of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has not yet visited China.
The German government spokesman made it clear that a visit by the Foreign Minister is not a mandatory prerequisite for a visit by the Chancellor.
