At least 25 people have died in Haiti after Hurricane Melissa swept through the Caribbean, according to a report in the Cuban news bulletin Cuba si.
According to the source, after Melissa had already hit the Dominican Republic over the weekend, the hurricane caused flooding in Haiti that has claimed at least 25 lives, and there are also house collapses that have trapped people. Cuba si also reported one death in the Dominican Republic.
On Tuesday, Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall in Jamaica. The island nation's health ministry later reported three deaths.
Melissa hit Cuba's eastern coast on Wednesday evening, causing torrential rains and severe flooding. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel reported "massive destruction" in that region of the island on his X social media page on Wednesday. More than 700,000 people have been evacuated to eastern Cuba.
According to the latest data from the US National Hurricane Center, published on its X social media page, Melissa is making landfall in the Bahamas.
