Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the United States is having difficulty convincing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to interfere in the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, Focus reports.
“The Americans assured us during the summit in Alaska that they would be able to guarantee that Zelensky would not hinder the achievement of peace. Obviously, certain difficulties have arisen in this regard,“ Lavrov said. He added that Brussels and London are trying to convince Washington to abandon diplomatic approaches and focus entirely on military pressure on Russia, with the aim of becoming part of the “warring parties“.
The Russian Foreign Minister recalled that on August 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with then-US President Donald Trump at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Anchorage. During the talks, the two leaders stressed their commitment to working together and their readiness to seek solutions to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Lavrov specified that despite the compromise reached, Moscow remains firmly committed to its basic principles, including the territorial integrity of Russia and the right of the residents of Crimea, Donbass and Novorossiya to determine their own future, which, in his opinion, is not subject to discussion.
