The international human rights organization "Amnesty International" has accused the paramilitary group fighting the Sudanese army of committing war crimes during its attack earlier this year on the largest camp for displaced people in the Darfur region, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are at war with the Sudanese army, devastated the Zamzam camp in April as part of a siege of the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur province. The RSF captured the city, the last army stronghold in Darfur, in October.

In a report by "Amnesty International" The report says the days-long attack by the SDF on Zamzam included the killing of civilians, the taking of hostages and the destruction of mosques, schools and health clinics, and that these should be investigated as war crimes.

"The SDF's horrific and deliberate attack on desperate, hungry civilians in Zamzam camp has once again exposed a disturbing disregard for human life," said Agnes Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International.

The Amnesty report is the latest in a series of reports by international human rights groups accusing the SDF of atrocities during Sudan's 30-month war. They include mass killings and rape in attacks on towns, particularly in Darfur. The Sudanese army has also been accused of atrocities during the war.

The power struggle between the army and the SBP escalated into war in April 2023. The conflict has claimed the lives of 40,000 people, although some human rights groups claim the death toll is much higher.
