At least three people have died after being swept away by a tidal wave in Tenerife.
Four others were injured, and one person is missing. The dead were two men and a woman.
The incident was reported at around 4pm local time yesterday. A woman was also rescued after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
Medical personnel treated three more injured people - two men and a woman. According to the Maritime Rescue Service, the wave swept away approximately 10 people who were in the water. Initial reports indicate that the dead were tourists, but their nationalities are still unclear.
A coastal hazard warning was issued in Tenerife on Friday. Just a month ago, three people died there again and 15 were injured after being swept away by high waves.
In the first 11 months of the year, 60 people drowned in the Canary Islands, seven fewer than the previous year, according to data compiled by the Association for the Prevention of Waterborne Accidents.
