No-confidence vote: Peru's parliament ousts President Jose Herrera - 1

The Peruvian parliament has ousted acting President Jose Herrera, who took office just four months ago, DPA reported.

This is the latest political upheaval in a country that has changed seven heads of state in less than 10 years.

Herrera lost a no-confidence vote held on Tuesday, with 75 of the 102 deputies voting against him.

Herrera, who was previously the speaker of parliament, became acting head of state in October after President Dina Boluarte was impeached.

Herrera has come under intense pressure recently over his informal meetings with Chinese business representatives and over alleged irregularities in the appointment of women to government positions posts.

"Heri exercised his power in secret - through secret meetings, midnight gatherings and contradictory statements," said congressman Jamel Echevarria before the vote of no confidence. The president has consistently denied the accusations, he added.

Peru's presidential election is scheduled for April. Parliament is expected to elect a new acting president today.

The last Peruvian president to serve a full five-year term was Ollanta Humala, who was in office from 2011 to 2016.
