Indonesia's attorney general's office has arrested the country's ombudsman, Heri Susanto, six days after his appointment, for allegedly accepting a bribe from a local nickel company, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Susanto took office as ombudsman on April 10, appointed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Susanto is alleged to have received 1.5 billion rupiah (just over 87 thousand euros) from a nickel company between 2021 and 2026, when he was part of the board of the Indonesian ombudsman's administration.

Susanto, the head of the investigation services to the prosecutor's office, reported that the company in question, known only by the initials TSHI, had problems calculating the fine imposed on it.

According to Nahdi, Susanto and the company had entered into an agreement that allowed the ombudsman to change the amount of the fine recommended by the country's forestry ministry.

"The agreement ordered the company to pay based on its own calculations," he added.

Susanto is likely to have violated rules against accepting bribes, which are included in the Indonesian Penal Code. For this, he could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
