The European Parliament today adopted a call for the abolition of Schengen land border checks for Bulgaria and Romania by the end of the year. Air and sea border checks for both countries were canceled from March 31, BTA reports.
According to MEPs, the long queues of lorries at the borders should disappear with the abolition of ground checks and the adoption of additional European legislation. They note that hundreds of goods vehicles are detained every day at the internal borders of the EU, and this leads to repercussions for the health and working conditions of drivers, for road safety and the activity of carriers.
The EP would like to introduce a mandatory legislative requirement that the inspection time of trucks does not exceed one minute per vehicle at EU borders. MEPs support the possibility for truck drivers to use smaller border posts under certain conditions.
