Tropical storm "Sara" reached northern Honduras late last night, threatening parts of Central America and southern Mexico with heavy rains, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
According to the US National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, "Sarah" made landfall about 165 km northwest of Cabo Gracias a Dios, on the border between Honduras and Nicaragua. It's near Bruce Laguna, a town of about 13,000. There are several other settlements nearby.
Mexican authorities warned that the storm could cause "intense rainfall" over the Yucatan Peninsula.
"Sarah" is accompanied by winds with a speed of about 75 km/h. According to the hurricane center, it is bringing torrential rains that could lead to life-threatening flooding and landslides.
The storm is forecast to pass over or very close to the popular tourist island of Roatan off the coast of Honduras on Sunday. It is then expected to head northwest toward Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula.
