Residents of Greece's popular tourist destination, the island of Santorini, have called for stricter building regulations to protect the unique landscape and cultural heritage of his island, reported the Greek publication “Kathimerini“.
In the cultural center “Belonio“ in the town of Fira, the municipality hosted the presentation of the first phase of the island's urban development plan, and the residents' desire was clear: less construction and more restrictions.
Mayor Nikos Zorzos has backed the residents of Santorini, saying the island needs a “new plan to curb irrational development”.
The proposed urban development plan includes a ban on new buildings in the caldera area and designates specific areas for tourism and recreation, such as the area around the village of Monolithos.
Residential construction will be limited to 12 percent of the island's area, and tourist facilities to 4.9 percent. Residents also called for strict controls on tourism investment and restrictions on Airbnb rentals. They demanded a total ban on construction in agricultural areas and protection of public lands.
Furthermore, islanders stressed the importance of preserving Santorini's natural beauty and traditional character, which are key to its appeal.
