US President-elect Donald Trump's ally, billionaire Elon Musk, met with Iran's ambassador to the United Nations on November 11, Monday, to to "reduce the tension" between Tehran and Washington, reported the American publication "New York Times", quoted by France Press.
The daily quoted two unnamed Iranian sources as saying that the meeting, which lasted more than an hour at a secret location in New York between Musk and Amir Saeed Iravani, was "positive" and represents "good news".
Iran's UN mission told AFP it "has no comment" on the subject. Donald Trump's team has also not confirmed the meeting.
As he had promised during the election campaign, the newly elected US president has chosen Elon Musk to head a new government structure that will be responsible for the effectiveness of the American executive branch and will be tasked with reducing public spending.
If the meeting is confirmed, it could be a sign that the newly elected president has decided to choose a diplomatic approach to Tehran, notes AFP.
During his first term, Trump adhered to the so-called "maximum pressure" on Iran, reinstating heavy sanctions against Tehran that were lifted as part of a historic nuclear deal struck in 2015.
Last week, Washington accused Tehran of participating in a plot to assassinate the US president-elect. In response, Iran urged Trump to adopt a new policy toward the Islamic country, sending a signal of openness in relations.
