US forces stationed in the Middle East have shot down Iranian drones aimed at Israel. This was stated by a representative of the Pentagon, quoted by AFP and BTA.
"Consistent with our unwavering commitment to support Israel's security, U.S. forces in the region continue to shoot down drones launched by Iran aimed at Israel," said this official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Our forces remain in positions to provide additional defense support and protect US forces operating in the region," he added.
Britain's Royal Air Force also said its fighter jets were being used to shoot down Iranian drones.
Explosions and air raid sirens rang out in Jerusalem after midnight after Iran launched a drone and missile attack on Israel in retaliation for a strike on Iran's diplomatic compound in Damascus in early April. This is the first time Iran has launched a direct military strike against Israel, although their enmity dates back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Britain called the Iranian attack on Israel "reckless", Italy expressed alarm, France condemned the "destabilizing actions" of Tehran, and Germany expressed concern that the entire region could be thrown into chaos.
