G7 works on a package of coordinated measures against Iran after Saturday's Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israel, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said today, quoted by Reuters, BTA writes.
"We are working as a matter of urgency with our allies to see what steps we can take together in a coordinated way to deter and condemn what Iran has done,'' Sunak said in Britain's parliament, summarizing the results of discussions between the leaders of the G-7 held yesterday evening.
"I spoke with the leaders of the G7 allied countries and we unanimously condemned this attack," he added.
On Saturday, Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel after it threatened to "retaliate" for the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, in which two Iranian generals were killed. These strikes raised the risk of escalation and growth of the conflict in the region, according to Reuters.
Italy, which is the rotating chair of the G7 this year, has previously said it is open to the idea of new sanctions against Iranian proxies acting against Israel.
Sunak said that coordinating any measures, which may include sanctions, among allies would ensure that they achieve maximum effect on Iran and the sanctioned individuals.
G-7 includes the most economically developed countries in the world such as the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, according to Reuters.
