On April 26, 1986, one of the greatest tragedies in human history occurred a story that causes a huge number of victims, but for which there are no statistics due to the silence and actions of the inhuman communist regime.
The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was one of the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the information blackout in Bulgaria is one of the worst crimes of communism. Today, as the Russian terrorist federation continues its war against Ukraine, the risk of another nuclear catastrophe is enormous.
"38 years ago, on April 26, 1986, the greatest man-made disaster in the history of mankind took place - the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which disrupted the security not only of Ukraine, but also of the entire region. While the Soviet regime was silent and openly lied about the scale of the tragedy at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, which resulted in many victims, Ukrainian rescuers risked their lives to eliminate the consequences", recalls the Embassy of Ukraine in Bulgaria.
Today, the Russian Federation continues its nuclear terror and the international community must realize that the nuclear security of Ukraine is the security of the whole world. The situation at the Zaporizhia NPP, temporarily occupied by the Russians since March 4, 2022, is getting worse every day. The seizure of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is not only a gross violation of international law, but also an act of nuclear blackmail. The only way to protect the world from potential catastrophe is to achieve the withdrawal of Russian troops and the return of the station to the control of Ukraine.
"As we remember the cost to our security in 1986 and now, the world must do everything possible to prevent another nuclear catastrophe. We call on all countries and international organizations that respect international law and abide by the norms and standards of nuclear and radiation safety to join the implementation of point 1 of the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy," the Ukrainian Embassy in Sofia also wrote on Facebook .
Prof. Dimitar Vatsov told DW that the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 led to one of the worst crimes of communism in Bulgaria: nowhere is the information blackout about dangerous radiation as strong as in our country. The communist authorities in 1986 knew perfectly well what the radiation was like in the country, what the risks were to the population and what had to be done to limit these risks. They have acted completely rationally and have taken all possible measures for themselves - through the UBO (Safety and Security Directorate under State Security), but they have refused to take similar measures for the rest, for the Bulgarian population.
