Turkish President Recep Erdogan has postponed his meeting at the White House with President Joe Biden, scheduled for May 9.
This was announced by a source familiar with the situation and a Turkish official representative, who wished to remain anonymous. It is unclear what prompted the postponement, with a new date expected to be set soon. The information was reported by AFP and Reuters, quoted by BNR.
This would be Erdogan's first visit to Washington since 2019, when he met with then-President Republican Donald Trump.
Erdoğan and Biden have met several times at international summits and spoken by phone since the Democratic US president took office in January 2021.
Relations between the US and Turkey have long been strained over differences on a number of issues. Although they thawed after Ankara ratified Sweden's bid for NATO membership earlier this year, tensions remain over Syria and Russia and the war in the Gaza Strip.
