The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova reacted with irony to the words of the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court ( ICC) Karim Khan, who requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, asking him when the United Kingdom will be punished for bombing Iraq, gazeta.ru reported.
„He just needs to answer the question of why the British started bombing Iraq and when the International Criminal Court will punish them for it,” Zakharova wrote on her Telegram channel.
On May 20, the ICC prosecutor requested an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Responding to criticism from Washington and London, he said the British had not bombed the Northern Irish capital in response to terrorist attacks.
On May 21, Zakharova said that US statements regarding the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country's Defense Minister Yoav Galant resembled the reaction of a spider caught in its own web.
The same day, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the ICC can prosecute Russia, but it has no such rights regarding Israel.
Earlier, the US Congress announced the possible introduction of sanctions against the ICC.
