Denmark approves F-16 fighter jets it donated to be used to hit military targets, even if it means entering Russian airspace, said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen in a conversation with the Ukrainian agency Ukrinform, BTA reports.
Denmark always intended these aircraft to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities, being fully aware that they could be used against Russian military targets, including on Russian territory, Rasmussen stressed his position before his participation in the Foreign Affairs Council meeting (trade) of the EU in Brussels.
"Our position is not new, but part of our support strategy. We have been transparent about this from the beginning, understanding that defense may require offensive action against military targets on Russian soil, “ the foreign minister explained.
Denmark is on track to take delivery of the first batch of F-16 fighter jets this summer and the Netherlands plans to follow suit in the fall. The initiative is part of a wider “airline coalition“ aimed at supporting Ukraine, demonstrating Copenhagen's proactive role in this alliance.
On May 16, Denmark announced a significant military aid package for Ukraine, totaling 750 million euros. It is designed to improve Ukraine's air defense and artillery capabilities. The country is exploring opportunities to invest in the Ukrainian military industry, further cementing its commitment to Ukraine's defense efforts.
