G7 to Kim Jong-un: Halt arms supplies to Russian military - 1

The foreign ministers of ten countries, including those of The G7 condemned the transfer of weapons from North Korea to Russia, reports "Reuters".

They indicated that the weapons were being used against Ukraine.

Ministers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Britain and the United States, along with the European Union, called on North Korea to end exports and end its nuclear weapons program.

"Our governments strongly oppose these ongoing arms transfers that Russia is using to strike Ukraine's critical infrastructure, prolonging the suffering of the Ukrainian people," the statement said.

Western allies confirmed recent sanctions they imposed on North Korea and Russia, but did not indicate new measures.

Earlier this month, Russia said Western claims that it maintains military cooperation with North Korea were inaccurate and stressed that its relationship with Pyongyang was neither directed against third countries nor a threat to regional security.< /p>

Today's declaration calls for North Korea to give up "all nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles and related programs in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner". It is argued that diplomacy is the only way to achieve lasting peace.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen since the North last year abrogated a 2018 pact aimed at de-escalating tensions near the military border and concluded under the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

The Western statement comes a day after North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles in a show of its willingness to launch a pre-emptive strike against the "gangster regime" in South Korea.
