The police officer injured in the knife attack yesterday during anti-Islam demonstration in the German city of Mannheim, has been placed in an artificial coma, said a spokesman for the law enforcement agencies, quoted by DPA and BTA.

"His condition remains critical," said the representative of the regional criminal police.

The attack was carried out yesterday morning during the manifestation of the "Pax Europe" movement. Several other people were injured in the attack. The perpetrator, who was shot by police while in custody, underwent surgery and could not yet be questioned, the spokesman said. The motivations for his actions remain unknown for now.

Several media reports have identified the suspect as a 25-year-old man from Herat, Afghanistan, who lives in southern Hessen province. According to security sources, he is married to a German woman with two children.

The anti-Islam movement "Pax Europe" stated that it will continue to organize public events in the future despite yesterday's attack.

Next Saturday, it is planned to set up its pavilion in front of the train station in Dortmund, in the province of North Rhine-Westphalia, the treasurer of the movement Stefani Kitsina told DPA.

She expects the police to take "enhanced security measures". "Pax Europe" does not intend to set his guard.

Member of the movement's governing board, Michael Stürzenberger, who was among the injured in yesterday's attack, "will certainly continue his activities,", Kitsina added. But he is not expected to participate in the event next week.
