Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said today that he opposes the possibility of Ukraine using Italian weapons for striking Russia, warning against taking “impulsive“ decisions on this matter, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.
Several NATO countries support the possible use of weapons supplied to Ukraine by Western countries to carry out attacks on Russian territory, but Italy, which is among the founding members of the alliance, remains opposed.
„This is a very delicate moment, we must not take wrong steps” and we must avoid “any impulsive measures or declarations,”, Tajani said during a visit to Rapallo, northwestern Italy, Italian agencies AGI and ANSA reported.
„Even the US has not authorized the indiscriminate use of its weapons, only the striking of the bases from which the drones take off. They are also very cautious," added the minister, quoted by AJI agency.
Tajani also added that Italy is ready “in the coming weeks” to send aid to Ukraine again.
However, he repeated that “we will not send a single Italian soldier to fight in Ukraine because we are not at war with Russia”, quoted by the Italian news agency AGI.
Germany announced yesterday that it has allowed Ukraine to fire German weapons at targets in Russia.
A day earlier, the US announced it had partially lifted its restrictions to allow Ukraine to defend Kharkiv Oblast, which borders Russia.
According to US officials, this change by Washington is in response to repeated bombings by Russian forces of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city.
