German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is expected to present today his plans for a new model of the military service, reported DPA and BTA.

After briefing the parliamentary defense committee, he plans to outline his proposals at a press conference this afternoon. Pistorius has said he supports some form of compulsory military service, at least to some extent - a controversial issue in Germany.

Compulsory military service in Germany was effectively abolished in 2011, although German law contains rules under which people can be conscripted in the event of war or other types of tension.

The German armed forces have been understaffed in recent years and last year the number of servicemen fell to 181,500 despite efforts to recruit volunteers.

The invasion of Russian forces in Ukraine necessitated an assessment of the state of the German armed forces - Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to revive them, DPA notes.

Defence Minister Pistorius has ordered a study of different models of conscription in the armed forces. He said in parliament that Germany cannot rely on volunteers alone.
