A governor from an opposition party was killed in Mongolia in the midst of campaigning for parliamentary elections to be held at the end of the month, it was reported today local authorities, quoted by France Press and BTA.

The victim is a member of the Democratic Party and the governor of an administrative region in central Mongolia, the police said in a statement, without revealing his identity.

Local media mention a man named B. Bayanmunkhin.

According to the police, the man was beaten to death yesterday under circumstances that remain unclear.

"We are saddened to announce this tragic news", the Democratic Party confirmed.

"A star of democracy, a representative of the people, our dear brother, a man of order lost his life" through the fault of "other people", the statement of the political organization says.

Mongolia, which lies between Russia and China and has a population of 3.5 million people, has scheduled its next parliamentary elections for June 28, according to AFP.
