A new law comes into force tomorrow that will make it easier to acquire German citizenship - 1

New law, which facilitates the acquisition of German citizenship, enters into force today, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The citizenship law reform pushed by Germany's ruling tripartite coalition makes it possible for a person to become a German citizen while retaining the citizenship of their country of origin. Until now, retaining the citizenship of the country of origin was only possible for citizens of other countries of the European Union.

Under the law changes coming into effect, people who meet all other conditions can apply for German citizenship after five years of residence in Germany. Until now, the requirement was eight years of residency.

Children who are born in Germany to foreign parents will receive German citizenship if one parent has resided legally on German territory for five years.

If the applicant for citizenship demonstrates "special achievements in integration" himself, such as performing particularly well at work or school, or showing a high degree of social commitment, he can obtain citizenship after three years of residence in Germany.

In addition, Germans who want to acquire citizenship of another country will no longer need special permission from the German authorities.
