Islamists carried out one of the deadliest attacks in Niger, DPA reported. Sources from the capital Niamey confirmed to DPA yesterday that the bodies of forty-seven military personnel were found on Tuesday morning in an area near Niger's borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, BTA reports.
Eighteen people were injured, eleven of them - seriously. Several servicemen are missing.
The military junta that rules Niger initially reported on state television that twenty-one had been killed. According to official information, heavily armed fighters on motorcycles and in armored fighting vehicles attacked a post near the village of Gotei, which is located about eighty kilometers from Niamey.
Islamist terrorist groups operate in the territory where the borders of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso meet, which is known as one of the most dangerous in the world, DPA notes.
