Hungary takes over the six-month presidency of the Council of the EU from today with the motto "Making Europe Great Again", BTA reported .
The country sets itself seven leading tasks, among which are the strengthening of the European defense policy, the continuation of the EU enlargement process, the fight against illegal migration, negotiations on the European policies of cohesion and agriculture.
Budapest noted that it will strive to eliminate the Schengen land borders for Bulgaria and Romania by the end of the year. The Presidency identified this issue as one of the leading tasks for the coming months. Completing this issue is a priority for us, the Hungarian permanent representative to the EU, Ambassador Balint Odor, said at the end of June.
On EU enlargement, he pointed out that Budapest's aspiration is to achieve the greatest possible progress with the countries of the Western Balkans, to start substantive negotiations with Albania, to make progress with North Macedonia. According to him, the Hungarian Presidency is ready to host an EU-Western Balkans meeting.
According to the ambassador, it can be expected that the presidency will work to adopt the necessary decisions related to Ukraine and the Middle East.
