Hurricane Beryl, classified as a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, spare Jamaica its wrath. The storm, which has already claimed several lives and caused major destruction in the Caribbean, took a different path, avoiding the island nation, according to DPA reports, BTA reports.

According to the island's weather service, the hurricane began to move away from Jamaica and headed towards the Cayman Islands.

On Monday "Beryl" it made landfall on the southeastern Caribbean islands of Carriacou, with about 6,000 inhabitants, and Petite Martinique, with about 900 inhabitants. Both belong to Grenada.

According to Grenada's National Disaster Management Agency, 98% of buildings on the two islands were damaged or destroyed.

Many trees and power poles are down and there is no electricity, water or telephone connection. All vegetation on the island of Carriacou has also been destroyed, Grenada Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell said.

Grenada has so far reported three deaths from the hurricane, Venezuela three and St. Vincent and the Grenadines one.

Expected tonight "Beryl" to reach the east coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula somewhat weakened, the US National Hurricane Center said.
