New fires broke out yesterday afternoon on the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia, BTA reported.

A firefighter received burns on his hands and back while extinguishing a fire that broke out on a hill above Bitola, forests near Hruchets and near Radovish, the director of the Crisis Management Center Stoyanche Angelov announced on TV Sitel, who specified that the active there are 10 fires in the country, most of them large.

In its extreme northwestern part, the fire that broke out six days ago on the border with Bulgaria, in Ograzhden Planina, has been extinguished, and with the intervention of specialized aircraft, the fire, which devastated hundreds of hectares of low-stemmed oak and pine forests, will be brought under control, he said Angelov.

The terrain of another big fire, which is burning for the sixth day in the Serta mountain, which covers 3 municipalities, is difficult to access, but the crisis headquarters has provided the necessary equipment for action, with firefighting activities planned to start early in the morning.

Yesterday, through the help requested by North Macedonia, through the European mechanism for civil protection, one helicopter and two specialized planes were sent from Turkey, today two helicopters are expected to arrive from Slovenia, one with a greater capacity to carry water from Serbia, and one or two from Montenegro, Angelov said.

In his words, the efforts of aviation equipment will be concentrated in order to be able to bring under control the large fires, which are in difficult-to-reach terrain for firefighters.

The government of North Macedonia has declared a state of crisis, and because of the increased risk of fires, movement in forests and forest areas in the country has been prohibited since yesterday.
