Russia charges lawyer with dual Russian-German citizenship with treason - 1

Russia has accused the lawyer with dual Russian and German citizenship German Moises of treason, the state news agency TASS reported on Tuesday, quoted by "Reuters", quoted by News.bg.

TASS reported that Moises helped Russians obtain European residence permits. He is being held in pretrial detention at Moscow's Lefortovo prison after being transferred from a detention center in St. Petersburg, the agency said.

TASS did not specify when the trial against him will begin, and "Reuters" His lawyer could not immediately be reached.

Moises joins a growing list of foreign nationals and dual nationals detained in Russia who have become embroiled in the crisis in relations between Moscow and the West during the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier "Reuters" reported that Moises, who was raised partly in Germany but returned to Russia as an adult, was arrested in St. Petersburg in late May.

The German Foreign Ministry confirmed the arrest of Moises in a statement to "Reuters" in June and said his embassy in Moscow was in contact with his family.

A German foreign ministry official said at the time that Moscow had denied Germany consular access to its prisoners for two years, but said Berlin remained "strongly committed to consular access in this and other cases".

Treason charges can carry life sentences in Russia, where acquittals for serious crimes are rare.

Moises worked as a lawyer and managing partner for Avers Group Germany, a Cologne-based consultancy, according to the company's website.

The website says the firm provides business support and property management services and also helps wealthy citizens of post-Soviet countries, including Russia, obtain a residence permit in Germany.

It is not clear whether Moises' arrest is related to his professional work.
