The US is not ready for a protracted conflict with either China, nor with Russia, and even less with both at the same time, writes Business Insider, referring to a report on national defense.
The 114-page document was released Monday by a bipartisan congressional committee that includes a retired general, a former Democratic congressman and a former US ambassador.
In a hypothetical war with China, the Pentagon could run out of ammunition within "three to four weeks". And overall, the US does not have enough weapons to "deter and repel an initial invasion” by powers like those of China.
Stockpiles of critical munitions such as anti-ship missiles may last only a few days, the report says. The deficit persists even after the US recently increased arms production because of supplies to Ukraine.
"U.S. industrial production is woefully inadequate to provide the equipment, technology, and ammunition needed today, let alone the demands of a great power conflict,” the report's authors concluded.
