Fifty of the 67 people killed in the crash between an “American Airlines“ passenger plane and a military helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington have been identified, Fire Chief John Donnelly said today, quoted by Reuters and BTA.
A military team is preparing to begin an operation to remove the remains of the two aircraft from the water. They will be taken to a hangar at the “Ronald Reagan“ National Airport in Washington.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims of the deadliest US air accident since 2001 since today visited the crash site.
Dozens of people arrived by bus and were escorted by police to the banks of the Potomac River, near the crash site.
A total of 64 people were on board the plane - passengers and crew, and three military personnel were in the "Black Hawk" helicopter. Among the passengers on the plane were figure skaters returning from the US Championships in Wichita, Kansas, the Associated Press recalls.
