The train is a mode of transport widely used by nearly 105 million Egyptians, but Egypt's vast railway network – one of the largest countries in Africa, is obsolete.
Frequent fatal crashes and train derailments have angered the public, who accuse the authorities of negligence. These accidents are usually attributed to infrastructure and maintenance issues.
In April 2021, the transport minister fired the head of the railway administration after two train crashes in less than a month claimed more than 40 lives.
In March 2023, four people were killed and 23 injured in a train derailment.
