The man who started a fire in a souvenir shop yesterday in the parliament building in Bucharest, was detained by the police, Agerpress reported, quoted by BTA.

The fire, which broke out in an area accessible to visitors in the Palace of Parliament, caused damage and forced the evacuation of around 300 people. No one was injured, the police said.

Prosecutors announced that a 56-year-old man with the initials O.N., who has no previous convictions, has been investigated for destruction of property.

In a statement from the prosecutor's office, it is noted that the man first sprayed incendiary liquid on the counter of a bar in the "Konstantin Brunkush" hall, located on the ground floor of the parliament building, and then ignited the liquid with a lighter. He then entered a nearby souvenir shop and sprayed a number of items with the same substance before setting them on fire.

"Extremely material damage was caused, but there was a danger that the fire would spread and destroy other property in the building. The intervention of firefighters was necessary to put out the fire," the announcement states.

The man managed to leave the parliament building after causing the fire and was arrested only 10 hours later in a hotel in Bucharest, where he was staying, Agerpress notes. The man has a permanent address in the northeastern district of Vaslui.
