Ursula von der Leyen to head to Kyiv to discuss Ukraine's winter needs - 1

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she will travel to Kiev tomorrow to discuss with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the needs of his country on the eve of winter, as quoted by BTA.

Von der Leyen noted that much of Ukraine's energy infrastructure had been destroyed by Russian airstrikes, and funds acquired from the profits from Russian property seized in the EU under European sanctions would be used to rebuild it.

According to her, the EU is ready to provide Kyiv with another 160 million euros for humanitarian aid and for repairs to the energy network. Since the start of the Russian military offensive two years ago, the EU has provided over two billion euros of support to cover Ukraine's energy needs, she added.

According to the President of the EC, the support provided, including the connection of the electricity transmission networks of the EU and Ukraine in 2022, covers about 25% of the winter consumption of the attacked country. Von der Leyen specified that the Russian strikes destroyed 80% of Ukrainian thermal power plants and a third of the country's hydropower plants.
