Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in an op-ed for the British magazine "Spectator" that it is time to allow of Ukraine to join NATO without waiting for the end of the war with Russia.
"There is a way to do this," Johnson notes in an op-ed for the magazine's Sept. 21 issue. "We may invite Ukraine to join even before the war is over,", the former British prime minister points out.
"This is because we could extend the security guarantees under Article 5 to all Ukrainian territory currently controlled by Ukraine (or at the end of this fighting), while affirming the absolute right of Ukrainians over the entire territory of their country since 1991," Johnson explains.
"We could protect most of Ukraine while supporting the right of Ukrainians to take back the rest (of the country). The NATO Treaty provides ample opportunities for this. See Article 6, which states that countries can become members even if the security guarantee does not apply to all their internationally recognized territories," added the former British prime minister.
"We must do this in the next few months because it is the biggest step we can take to end this disgusting war. By including Ukraine in NATO, we will send a decisive message to the Kremlin that the Russians really need to hear, Johnson concluded in his article for the Spectator.
