Australia discusses sending decommissioned Abrams tanks to Ukraine - 1

The Australian government is discussing with the US President Joe Biden's administration the possibility of sending decommissioned tanks "Abrams" in Ukraine, the "Sydney Morning Herald" newspaper reported, citing government sources, "Kiev Post" wrote, quoted by News.bg.

The publication recalls that in 2004, Australia purchased from the US 59 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks, which were decommissioned in July 2024, as the country began to receive modernized M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams. Although these tanks are 20 years old, they have been used quite rarely.

Since the tanks are American-made, their transfer requires official approval from Washington.

"Kyiv Post" however, he assures that this is only a formality, since the US has already provided Ukraine with 31 modernized M1A1 machines. Meanwhile, before approval is given, the Australian Army will inspect each tank and determine what repairs are needed to ensure they meet operational standards.

"These tanks are still in good condition. The Ukrainians are fighting a war for their national survival, so we need to get them there as soon as possible," said former Australian soldier Michael Shoebridge.

The publication, citing sources from the Australian government, adds that during the talks between Canberra and Washington, the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine in order to preserve the balance of power in Europe continues to be emphasized. This position is fully supported by the opposition parties.

In turn, one of the Australian senators stated to the "Kiev Post" that Australia's support for Ukraine "should not be half-hearted, as their struggle is also a test of will for all democratic nations.
