The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked "terrorist targets in Beirut,", the army said in a statement on the "X" platform. In the early hours of today, Israeli forces issued warnings for the evacuation of people living in several buildings in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage.
Earlier today, the pro-Iranian Shiite movement "Hezbollah" reported that early this morning its fighters clashed with Israeli forces that had infiltrated the village of Adaiseh in southern Lebanon and forced them to withdraw, Reuters reported. The strikes on Beirut came hours after Iran launched a massive missile attack on Israel, firing about 180 rockets, according to initial figures from the Israeli military, DPA noted.
Iran warned the US not to intervene in the conflict after yesterday's missile attack on Israel, the semi-official Iranian news agency "Tasnim" reported, citing Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi.
Iran said the attack was carried out in response to the killings of the political leader of the Palestinian armed organization "Hamas" Ismail Haniya and the head of "Hezbollah" Hassan Nasrallah. Tehran also warned of "devastating and destructive attacks" if Israel responded. Iran's strike came hours after the IDF launched a "limited and contained" ground operation against targets of "Hezbollah" in southern Lebanon. The continued escalation of tensions has increased fears that the Middle East is on the brink of an all-out regional war, DPA notes.
