The runway at the airport in the Japanese city of Miyazaki was closed to flights today after an explosion on the taxiway caused by an unexploded American bomb from the Second World War, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing the Japanese authorities, quoted by BTA.

Local authorities reported that no one was injured in the incident. It is being investigated by the Japan Self-Defense Force's explosive ordnance disposal team.

Unexploded American World War II bombs have previously been found in the Miyazaki airport area, Kyodo said.

Japan's Ministry of Transport announced that agency officials saw a huge hole at the site of the explosion, about seven meters in diameter and approximately one meter deep.

Long queues of passengers formed at Miyazaki Airport after flights were suspended. The airport is located about five kilometers from the city center, which is the regional capital of the Japanese prefecture of the same name.
