German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced today that he will ask the Bundestag for a confidence vote on December 16, which will pave the way for early parliamentary elections in February, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.
Scholz announced his plans in a speech to the lower house of the German parliament after the tripartite coalition he led collapsed last week.
Initially, he wanted to call early elections at the end of March – half a year before the regulars, which were due to be produced in September 2025. However, the center-right opposition insisted on a faster vote in the parliament so that an earlier date could be announced for the next elections.
In the end, party leaders from across the political spectrum agreed today on the two dates - the vote of confidence and the new elections.
