US state?! Never!: Canadian opposition takes up Trump's election threat - 1

The leader of the Canadian opposition Conservative Party, Pierre Poiliever, promised that if he wins the election, he will prevent the country from joining the US and guarantee the security of its borders, including in the Arctic.

"Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country," the politician said in a statement published on Tuesday in X. "I will fight for Canada".

Poiliever also claims that he intends to guarantee complete security of Canada's borders in the future. "When I become prime minister, we will rebuild our military and take back control of our border, take back control of our Arctic to keep Russia and China out," the opposition leader said. He also accused current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of failing to convey "these obvious things" to the Americans.

On January 6, Trudeau announced that he would step down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada and resign as prime minister once a new Liberal leader is elected. Canada's election is scheduled for October, but could be called earlier due to the prime minister's resignation. In early January, Nick Nanos, head of research company Nanos Research, reported that Trudeau currently has only 17.4% of Canadians trusting him, while Poiliever's rating is 40%, so he has every chance of becoming the next prime minister of Canada.

Earlier, newly elected US President Donald Trump said that many Canadians support their country becoming the 51st US state. He believes that such an alliance would not only bring economic stability to Canada, but also protect it from external threats, which, according to the newly elected president, come from "Russian and Chinese ships".
