Six people have died in the collapse of a building in central Athens, Greek broadcaster „Sky“ reported. Rescue teams have found the bodies of the last two people missing since the explosion on September 25.
Among the victims are four American citizens who were staying in a short-term apartment. The other two victims were an elderly couple who lived on the second floor of the building.
„The bodies of the last two people missing have also been found“, authorities said.The rescue operation continued throughout the night. 30 firefighters and three dogs participated in the rescue, with the teams working in the heavily damaged building and under neighboring structures.
Version of gas failure is being investigated
At least two buildings bordering the collapsed building were found to be structurally unstable. The area remained dangerous due to the damage caused by the explosion and subsequent collapse.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been officially established. One of the versions being considered is that the explosion was caused by a malfunction in the gas installation, BTA reports. The investigation must establish how the incident occurred.
