Eleven people have died in Istanbul in just 24 hours after consuming fake alcohol, Turkish television NTV reports.
Among the deceased are several citizens of Turkmenistan.
According to NTV, more than 50 people have died in Istanbul recently from consuming fake alcohol.
Due to the increase in deaths, the Istanbul governorate has begun implementing various measures in an attempt to deal with the problem.
In accordance with these measures, shops selling alcohol are now required to have a 24-hour video recording system.
Meanwhile, late last night, Istanbul governor Davut Gul announced that the licenses of 63 alcohol sales establishments in the city had been revoked and the establishments were closed, as it was found that counterfeit alcoholic beverages were sold there, the news website Son dakika reported.
Gül also drew attention to the extremely worrying trend of increasing deaths after consuming such beverages.
The consumption of counterfeit alcohol is an extremely serious social problem in Turkey, where alcohol is expensive due to high excise taxes. Every year, dozens of citizens die from poisoning with counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
