Sweden mass shooting: Police reveal new details, refute false claims - 1

Swedish police said on Monday that "false stories" were being spread on social media about last night's mass shooting at an education center that killed at least 11 people, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

“We want to make it clear that based on the investigation and intelligence information, there is currently no information to suggest that the perpetrator acted out of ideological motives“, said a brief statement on the police website.

According to police, 11 people were killed and many were injured in the shooting at the school in the town of Örebro, located about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm.

The motive for the crime is not known at this stage and police believe that the suspected perpetrator, who was one of the victims and had not previously come into the sights of law enforcement, acted alone.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said yesterday that the attack was the bloodiest mass shooting in Swedish history, and said it was a “painful” day“. King Carl XVI Gustaf offered his condolences.

Sweden is struggling to cope with a series of shootings and bomb attacks caused by a widespread problem with gangs and crime, Reuters reported. The country of 10 million people has had the highest rate of gun violence per capita in the European Union in recent years. However, deadly attacks on schools are rare.

Ten people were killed in school violence between 2010 and 2022, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention.
