Germany opened its embassy in the Syrian capital Damascus today - more than three months after the overthrow of former President Bashar Assad, reports DPA, BTA.
The diplomatic mission was officially opened by German Foreign Minister Analene Baerbock, who is on a visit to Damascus. The German embassy in Syria was closed in 2012, a year after the outbreak of the country's civil war.
Bashar Assad ruled Syria for more than two decades. After a swift offensive by the Islamist group "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" he fled to Russia.
Since then, the new transitional government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has been working to restore security and revive the economy, DPA notes.
Berbock is expected to meet with al-Sharaa during his visit.
