US President Donald Trump will send his special envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg to possible peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which are expected to be held on May 15 in Istanbul, „Reuters“ reported, BTA reports.
The decision comes a day after Trump, during his visit to the Middle East, said that he was considering personally attending the meeting between the two countries.
At the end of April, Steve Witkoff was already in Moscow, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the possibilities of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
On May 11, Putin proposed to Kiev to hold a meeting on May 15 in Istanbul to reach a ceasefire agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's response was not long in coming - he said he would personally wait for Putin in Turkey.
However, earlier today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not confirm the composition of the Russian delegation. "As soon as the president decides, we will announce it," Peskov said during a briefing.
On the Ukrainian side, presidential advisor Mikhail Podoljak stressed that Zelensky is ready to meet only with the Russian president. "In Istanbul, there will be a meeting only between Zelensky and Putin - with no one else," Podoljak said.
