The presidential candidate of the nationalist party "Alliance for the Unification of Romanians" Gheorghe Simion said today that he will keep his word and appoint Calin Georgescu as prime minister if he wins the runoff on Sunday, BTA reported.

On the last day of the election campaign in Romania, the two appeared on air together and gave their first joint interview to "Realitată Plus" television. The AUR leader was invited to the Cotroceni presidential palace for a final showdown with his opponent, Nicosor Dan, but he declined the invitation.

"This is the sixth month that Mr. Georgescu was supposed to be president of Romania", said the AUR leader.

“I will take over the post of prime minister and we will form a tandem”, noted Calin Georgescu in turn. He outlined three main priorities.

“First, peace must be secured and obviously we are doing everything to protect Romania from any wars. Second, we want economic well-being for the country. There is a need to discuss all deals with all leaders, just like President (of the United States) Donald Trump is doing, and let it be clear that we are talking about economic war. Third. We are talking about protecting traditional values. I mean family values, religion. And this is about all religions“, explained the former independent candidate for president of Romania.

“The only ones who can provide us with peace are the United States, not NATO. NATO is the United States”, he added.

In response to a question about whether he wants Romania to leave the EU, Georgescu said: “There is no way. We have a plan to catch up on everything the EU owes us, to triple the absorption”.

French President Emmanuel Macron warned that the victory of far-right Eurosceptic MP Gheorghe Simion in the presidential elections in Romania would have negative consequences for neighboring Moldova, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

“If the pro-Russian and anti-European candidate is elected, the consequences for Moldova will, of course, be extremely harmful”, Macron told reporters at a meeting of European leaders in Albania. He did not elaborate on what he meant.

In the Albanian capital, Macron condemned the interference in elections in Europe, particularly in Romania, saying it undermines the integrity of European democracies, Agence France-Presse reported earlier.

"We see very clearly through our elections, Romania is experiencing it right now, Moldova experienced it very recently, that there are threats that undermine the integrity of our democracies, that undermine their resilience," Macron said at the opening of the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Tirana.

Far-right candidate Simion is the favorite in the second round of Romania's presidential election. The runoff will take place on Sunday. The vote will be closely watched after the vote on November 24, 2024. was canceled due to suspicions of Russian interference in favor of the previous far-right candidate, Calin Georgescu, who was critical of the EU and NATO, AFP notes.

Meanwhile, Simion, who is the presidential candidate of the nationalist party “Alliance for the Unity of Romanians“, accused Macron of “dictatorial tendencies” and said that Paris had interfered in the Romanian elections, BTA reported earlier.

“I love France and the French people, but I do not like the dictatorial tendencies of Emmanuel Macron. France interfered in the Romanian elections. The French ambassador to Romania spoke with the president of the Constitutional Court, who annulled the elections in Romania. The French ambassador has been traveling through all regions of the country in recent weeks to convince businessmen to support my opponent, the mayor of Bucharest,“ Simion said last night on the French television CNews.

The independent candidate for president of Romania and current mayor of Bucharest, Nicosor Dan, apologized to France for the statements made by his opponent.

“I want to tell the French that Mr. Simion's statements are not in line with the perceptions of Romanians and if I were president of Romania, I would apologize on behalf of the Romanian people for his statements,“ reacted Nicosor Dan, quoted by Digi24.
