At least 30 people have died in Beijing after heavy downpours, Xinhua reported, quoted by BTA, citing data from the municipal flood control office.

The death toll was up to midnight local time.

In recent days, the Miyun area and other parts of Beijing have been experiencing extreme and severe weather events caused by warm and humid air from the end of a subtropical anticyclone.

At 8:00 p.m. yesterday, the Beijing Municipal Flood Control Office activated the highest level of the city-wide flood emergency response mechanism.

During the cycle of "continuous extreme rain" in the Chinese capital, rainfall reaching 543.4 mm fell in the northern regions. The deaths occurred in mountainous areas north of Beijing, with 28 in Miyun and two in Yangqing. 80,322 Beijing residents were evacuated due to the heavy rains.

Late last night, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered "massive" rescue operations to reduce casualties.

The recent floods and disasters have caused "significant casualties and property losses" in places including Beijing and the provinces of Hebei, Jilin and Shandong, Xi said.
