Eight healthy babies with DNA from three parents were born in the UK as a result of an experiment, Sky News reported.
It is noted that the right to undergo the procedure is available to women at risk of developing serious diseases, in particular mitochondrial dysfunction. The names of the children and their parents are not disclosed, but one of the women noted that the severity of the disease has been replaced by “hope, joy and deep gratitude“.
As CNN specifies, the babies have DNA from three people - the mother's egg, the father's sperm and the donor's mitochondria. The approval of this method required a change in UK law in 2016.
A total of 22 women underwent the procedure, but only seven of them were able to become pregnant. As a result, eight children were born, five of whom had no signs of hereditary diseases. The success rate was 36 percent.
